MAY 1981-HIGH GEAR Page 3
A statement from the GEAR Board
GEAR Membership drive announced
Spring is a time of growth and renewal, and also a time of rededication.
This Spring the GEAR Foundation is having its first formal membership drive. The broader and more diverse our base of support, the more we can do.
The theme of our membership, drive is "Adopt a community." Adopting something means that you make it your own.
We urge you to adopt the GEAR Foundation and the community of men and women who are its members. To borrow a well known phrase: "We do it all for you." We want to be doing it all for all of you. The GEAR Foundation is awaiting adoption by all members of the Cleveland area's Gay and Lesbian Community.
The strength of the GEAR Foundation is its members-those who give time, concern, and money.
Members, for example, have donated needed office equipment, sofas, tables, and even floral arrangements to the Community Center to make it more comfortable and pleasant to visit and work within. Many have said, "I'll drive," "I'll type," and "I'll help stuff envelopes."
What we have needed and wanted our members have been turning into reality.
We have grown to over 200 members and we are growing all of the time.
There are, however, thousands who have never heard of the GEAR Foundation and are , unaware of the positive work and
the genuine enjoyment that go with being involved with it.
We think that they are missing a great deal.
Why not help us spread the word?
Notice the various activities of the GEAR Foundation mentioned in this issue of HIGH GEAR.
part of this membership drive.
Always inexpensive, officially adopting us will never cost less. We want you and need you so we can grow faster.
Before us is growth. Why
exclude yourself from growing along with us?
The only way to be excluded is by excluding yourself. Adopt a community.

Youth Group Meets

shortly after starting. Many things were discussed, including everything from the problems of being gay and young, to the organization of the group. All members participated in a comfortable atmosphere.
The GEAR Foundation has long felt the need of the gay youth group in the Greater Cleveland area. These youths need support in handling the day-today crisis of dealing with others and themselves. For a long time our youths have not had a place to meet other gay individuals like themselves or had the chance to explore themselves through others. Therefore, GEAR has re-ings are held at least once each organized a Gay Youth Group to serve their needs.
